Mattress Cleaning: Keeping Moisture Low and Drying It Fully

Johannesburg · Pretoria · Centurion. Free, no-obligation request: we’ll call you back to confirm the price and a time.

The short answer

A mattress should get as little moisture as possible. We use extraction only where the maker's care instructions allow it and the construction suits it, and otherwise we say so. It must dry fully before sheets go back on. We take requests in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Centurion. Ask for a quote and we phone with a price.

Moisture

Why moisture is the whole question

A mattress is not a carpet. Water that sinks into the filling is slow to leave, and trapped moisture can lead to mould. Mattress makers say the same: never soak it.

So the aim is the opposite of a deep soak. Put in as little liquid as possible, pull it back out with suction, and let air finish the job. Foam, latex and comfort layers absorb water and dry slowly, and many mattresses of every type contain them, so we judge the whole construction.

Steam adds heat and moisture and is discouraged by several mattress makers, especially for foam. We use extraction only where the maker's care instructions allow it and the construction (foam, latex, comfort layers) suits it. Otherwise we say so, and tell you how we would approach your mattress before we book.

The care label comes first

Check your mattress maker's advice first

Look for the care label or the maker's care guide, and read it before you book. Some makers advise against wet vacuums, carpet cleaners and steam cleaners unless the care instructions say otherwise. Some warranties do not cover moisture damage.

Found a warning? Tell us when you request the quote. If your maker advises against wet extraction, we say so and talk through what is left, which may be surface vacuuming or a spot treatment.

No label? Ask the shop or the brand. We can only go by what you tell us about the mattress type, so tell us what it is made of, such as springs, foam, latex or a mix.

Before the visit

What to do before we arrive

  • Strip the bed and wash the sheets and mattress protector.
  • Note the size: single, three-quarter, double, queen or king.
  • Tell us about stains, and whether they are old, or from a spill or an accident.
  • Choose a dry room with airflow for the mattress to dry in, ideally one where it can stand or lie flat undisturbed.
  • Mention what it is made of (springs, foam, latex) and any care label wording.
After the visit

Drying, and when the bed is back in use

Sheets and protectors go back on only when the whole mattress is dry, and a dry cover says little about the filling. Putting bedding back too early traps moisture and can start mildew.

We do not give a fixed drying time, because it depends on the mattress, the weather and the room. A dry day with open windows or a fan helps. If you are unsure it is dry, leave the bedding off, sleep somewhere else, and phone us.

A washable mattress protector afterwards reduces how much dirt and moisture reaches the mattress, and so reduces how often you need to clean it.

Honest limits

What we do not promise

We make no health claims about cleaning a mattress, and no promises about what it removes. Old stains may fade without going completely.

Questions people ask

How should a mattress be cleaned?

Keep the moisture low, never soak, and keep it out of use until it is fully dry before the sheets return. The maker's care instructions come first, since advice differs with the mattress construction.

How do you deep clean a mattress?

Deep cleaning is mostly a question of how much water goes in. Makers advise against soaking, and against steam on foam. We use extraction only where the maker's care instructions allow it and the whole construction suits it, and otherwise we say so.

How much does mattress cleaning cost?

Mr Steam's list of 1 September 2026 shows R200 for a single and R330 for a king, which is one operator's figure only. Size and stains set your quote. Sources are in the cost guide.

How long before I can sleep on it again?

Once we say it is dry. A dry cover says little about the filling, so if you are unsure, sleep somewhere else and ask us. We give you our best estimate when we finish, and it varies with mattress, weather and room.

Can a foam or latex mattress be cleaned?

Foam and latex soak up water and release it slowly, so makers urge caution and many advise against wet methods. Tell us the type and the label wording, and we say honestly what we would do.
