Carpet Cleaning: How It Works, Drying and Aftercare

Johannesburg · Pretoria · Centurion. Free, no-obligation request: we’ll call you back to confirm the price and a time.

The short answer

Hot water extraction sprays hot water and solution into the carpet, then pulls it out with the loosened dirt. Published cleaning guides say most carpets dry in 6 to 12 hours, longer in humid or stuffy rooms. Keep pets and children off until fully dry. Request a quote and we ring with a price.

The method in plain words

How does hot water extraction clean a carpet?

The cleaner works in three moves. A solution goes onto the carpet and is worked into the pile. Hot water is then sprayed in. Suction pulls the water out again, along with the dirt that came loose.

The point of the last move is to take the water back out. A carpet that is extracted well holds less moisture, so it dries sooner. That is also why a careful cleaner goes over the same strip more than once.

What is removed: loose soil, ground-in dust and many everyday spills. What is not promised: some stains stay. A stain that has sat in the pile for weeks is more likely to leave a lasting colour change, even once all the staining material is gone. Food colouring and dye stains are generally treated as permanent. Tell us what it was and how old it is, and we say plainly what to expect.

Before the visit

What to do before we arrive

A few minutes of preparation helps the clean.

  • Vacuum first, if you can. Loose grit is easier to lift dry.
  • Clear the floor of toys, shoes, cables and small items.
  • Move breakables and light furniture out of the room. Tell us about heavy pieces, and we say what we can shift.
  • Tell us about stains. What spilled, when, and what has been tried on it already.
  • Mention stairs and loose rugs when we call you back, since they change the time and price.
  • Sort out the pets. Plan a room where dogs and cats can wait with the door shut.
Drying time

How long does carpet take to dry?

Two trade guides, IE Carpet Care and Mother Nature's Cleaning, put drying at 6 to 12 hours after hot water extraction. One of those ranges is for truck-mounted extraction. Neither is a standard or a promise for your house. Your carpet may dry sooner or later.

What stretches it towards 24 hours:

  • thick or heavily soiled carpet
  • humid weather
  • limited ventilation
  • padding underneath that has taken in water

What speeds it up: fans, ceiling fans or air movers, a dehumidifier, and open windows when the air outside is dry.

Carpet still wet after 24 hours is a warning sign. Call us the same day and we will check the carpet, backing and underlay. Use fans and windows to help it dry, but do not rely on them. A damp smell getting stronger is also worth a call.

After the visit

Pets, children and furniture

  • Keep pets and children off until the carpet is fully dry. Damp carpet picks up dirt quickly, and wet fibres are easy to stain.
  • Avoid walking on damp carpet. Foot traffic can push moisture deeper. If you must cross it, wear clean socks, and keep crossings to a minimum. Wet socks can slip on tiles or other hard floors when you step off the carpet, so take care at the edge.
  • Wait before heavy furniture goes back. One cleaning company advises 24 hours. If you must put pieces back sooner, use pads under the legs, since furniture on a damp carpet can trap moisture and leave marks.
  • Keep the airflow going while the carpet dries, and call us if you are unsure it is drying.

Wool, silk and special rugs

Natural fibres such as wool need care in how they are cleaned. Silk and antique rugs need more. If you have any of these, say so when you request the quote. We tell you whether we will take it on before we agree a price, and we make no promises about old dyes or delicate weaves.

Cost

What decides the price?

Floor area, stain level, stairs and furniture to move set the quote. The cost guide lists published South African figures with their sources.

  • Hot water extraction sprays hot water and detergent into the carpet and extracts it with dislodged dirt; thorough extraction avoids mould and browning of wool; caution with wool; longer a stain stays the higher the chance of permanent colour change; artificial food colouring stains generally permanent (encyclopaedia entry, checked 7 Nov 2026) en.wikipedia.org
  • 6 to 12 hours is the range in this guide, which is about truck-mounted hot water extraction; Mother Nature's gives a similar range, and we treat it as trade-guide guidance, not a standard; heavier cleaning, thick carpet, humid weather, limited ventilation and wet padding extend it to 12 to 24 hours; noticeably wet after 24 hours is a problem (cleaning-industry page, checked 7 Nov 2026) www.iecarpetcare.com
  • 6 to 12 hours in most cases; fans, open windows if dry outside, dehumidifier; avoid walking on damp carpet, clean socks; wait 24 hours before heavy furniture, pads if sooner; airflow as a drying aid (cleaning company blog, checked 7 Nov 2026) www.mothernaturescleaning.com

Questions people ask

Which method works best on carpet?

Professionals mostly use hot water extraction, where hot water and solution go in and suction takes them out with the loosened dirt. Thorough extraction matters, since leftover water can lead to mould and, on wool, browning.

Can I walk on the carpet after cleaning?

Wait until it is dry if you can. If you must cross, put on clean socks and keep crossings to a minimum. Wet socks can slip on tiles or other hard floors when you step off the carpet. Foot traffic on a damp carpet can push moisture deeper and carry dirt in.

Will every stain come out?

Not always. Age, fibre and cause all matter, and dye stains are often treated as permanent. Before we start, we say what looks realistic.

Does the carpet smell after cleaning?

A slightly damp smell while it dries is common. If a smell is getting stronger after a day or two, the padding may still be wet, so phone us the same day. Open windows only if the air outside is dry.

Do I need to be home?

A person must open the door and show us the rooms. After that, tell us when you agreed to be out, and keep children and pets in another room while we work.
